Engine overheating

Overheating is a coolant temperature that climbs above the range the engine is designed to hold.

A gauge in the red, a sweet smell, or a warning lamp can appear with P0217. P0128 is different: the engine stays too cool because the thermostat may not close.

Stop and let the engine cool before opening the cooling system. Then compare the stored code with coolant level, fan operation, and the sensor pages.

A trouble code marks a condition to test. It does not by itself prove which part to replace.
